Stop Calling Video Games Art

09.28.08 | 3 Comments

Please stop calling video games art.

Art is a name you give something to keep people from taking it seriously.

It’s a name you give something to make it safe. Names in general do that.

Think about the good “art” today and you will see how it’s trying not to be “art” – “art” as in something in a museum, in a wall, that people pay to see. Graffiti. Internet art. That stuff. And just barely.

But even those are falling aside. Gaming is so pure and great right now. So, STOP CALLING GAMES ART. That way, they’ll be powerful forever.

Sadly, it’s just a symptom of loving games. I know you have the best of intentions.

I also know I probably won’t be able to stop you.

Ask yourself why you want video games games to be art?

So people will take you seriously?

The right people already take you seriously.

Yeah, I don’t get this games as art thing. But I’m a guy who walks away from any “what is art” discussion because I know I’ll ruin it for everyone.

You have Cory Arcangel’s website bookmarked, he makes videogame art, but what videogames are people actually calling art here? I’ve only heard people speculate that they might go there with videogames, not that they’re really here… I guess when people buy games and never open them, we’ll know we’re there.
