Scrying URLs

04.25.12 | 1 Comment

The 140 character limit on Twitter is definitely important in regards to what it does to conversation and information density. It can be annoying at times, but it is a crucial part of its design. This is why the shortened URLs break my heart. They seem like such an unfortunate victim of this, because an unshortened URL can be valuable as information too, especially to those who know how to read them.

On 05.01.12 Rey Dhuny scribed these epic words:

Completely. A URL has loads of juicy stuff (pointed to some bits here: http://dhuny.com/133).

I think Dave Winer was onto something here: http://scripting.com/stories/2012/04/30/twittersChangeIsUnfortunat.html where he says: “The URLs should not have been in the 140-characters of a tweet. They should have been transmitted as metadata, with all the other metadata that accompanies a message.”

There’s a fair bit of metadata for each twttr update anyway: http://www.scribd.com/doc/30146338/map-of-a-tweet
